Intra-State (same state): split equally into Central (CGST) and State (SGST). Inter-State (between states): Integrated GST (IGST).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are applied when buyer and seller are located in the same state (Intra-State supply). The tax amount is shared 50:50 between the Central and State governments.

IGST (Integrated GST) is levied when goods or services are supplied from one state to another (Inter-State supply) or imported into India. The total tax is collected by the Central Government and subsequently allocated.

When adding GST (tax-exclusive price):

GST Amount = Base Price × (GST Rate / 100)

Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount

For example, on ₹10,000 at 18% GST: Tax is ₹1,800 (CGST ₹900 + SGST ₹900) and Total Payable is ₹11,800.

When extracting base price from a tax-inclusive total:

Base Amount = Total Price × 100 / (100 + GST Rate)

GST Amount = Total Price - Base Amount

For example, if Total Amount is ₹11,800 at 18% GST: Base Amount is ₹10,000 and GST Amount is ₹1,800.

GST in India has 4 main tax rate slabs:

  • 5%: Essential items, apparel under ₹1,000, basic foods, transport services.
  • 12%: Processed foods, computers, smartphones, apparel above ₹1,000.
  • 18%: Most IT services, financial services, telecom, industrial goods.
  • 28%: Luxury goods, automobiles, tobacco, gaming, demerit products.
